Putting the “Social” into Social Justice

Just watched the Pepsi ad, finally.

Just watched the Pepsi ad, finally. I think the thing that blew me away the most was its depiction of protests–specifically protests by millennials–as social occasions. It was as though a party was happening in the streets, leading Jenner and others to join it, not because they agreed with its unstated goals, but because of FOMO and a desire to have fun.

Protests are not about fun. They are about fighting injustice. You couldn’t live in St. Louis after the events in Ferguson without seeing a fair share of protests–and how thoroughly Pepsi “missed the mark” with this one astounds me. I had friends who were tear gassed by the police. Does anyone know if Pepsi is an effective cure for that?
