Between My Finger and My Thumb

“Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I’ll dig with it.”
~“Digging”, Seamus Heaney

About

The title of this blog comes from the first major work of the Nobel Prize winning Irish poet, Seamus Heaney. It is a poem in which he introduces himself, and his poetic mission, to the world by comparing the act of poetic construction to the potato digging his father and his father before him performed in order to stay alive.
I can’t promise to be the kind of writer to compete with Heaney, or with the critic Samuel Johnson quoted above, but I can hope to emulate both for their insight and clarity of language.
I intend this place on the internet to be a place of critical thinking and of compassion. It is the continuation from my Patreon project begun several years ago, in which I set out to write an essay each workday of the week. Now, some time later, I can admit that initial venture was somewhat of a failure.
However, its spirit and its intention continue. I intend to fill this place with words and words and more words. I write about politics, offer cultural analysis, and use literature to explain the world. Your mileage may vary.
And if you want to keep up with my verbal doings, subscribe or follow me on Twitter, https://twitter.com/2drdave3.
